    The American Academy of Orthopedics Surgeons is a leader in the emergency care field and one of the most respected names in injury, illness, and emergency medical care. In 1972, the AAOS pioneered EMS education by publishing Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, the first EMS training program available. Today, the AAOS Emergency Care and Safety Institute continues that dedication to future emergency responders and the instructors who are paving their way.

    The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) is also providing a review of the Medical content for all ECSI programs. ACEP is pleased to join with the AAOS to provide emergency care and safety products and training programs of exceptional quality and value.

    Those with adequate content knowledge (e.g. First Aid, CPR, AED) who can also demonstrate adequate teaching experience (e.g. professional educator; state EMS, fire, or police instructor; or an instructor from another nationally recognized training program) can receive instructor reciprocity. Instructor reciprocity is free and requires a simple orientation to the course materials and ECSI policies and procedures online and completion of an online application.

    No. The Educational Centers and Institute Instructors keep the course rosters. Education Centers or Institute Instructors should log onto the membership section of the web site and enter basic course information to maintain instructor records.

    Yes, those with little or no teaching experience must participate in a formal Instructor Candidate Course (ICC). The ICC covers topics such as teaching methodologies, complying with Institute policies and procedures, course objectives, conducting skill practice sessions, and administering examinations. ICCs are administered by Institute Instructor-Trainers

    There are no instructor fees or annual renewal fees for Emergency Care and Safety Institute Instructors.

    Yes, Institute Instructors can purchase Emergency Care and Safety Institute products at net price (20% off list price).

  8. How can my training agency become an Educational Center with Emergency Care and Safety Institute? (Back to Top)

    The process to become an ECSI Educational Center is easy. Complete the free application for ECSI Educational Center status. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt. Applicants will receive notification of the decision within 2-3 days after receipt of complete application.

    There are no member or annual fees for Educational Centers.

    Yes, Educational Centers can purchase Emergency Care and Safety Institute products at an additional 10% off net price.

    There are no limitations on the type of classes that you can teach. There are no restrictions on the type of groups (community, worksite, academic, professional, etc) that you can teach. You must be an authorized instructor in a particular course to issue Institute course completion...

    No, you can maintain your current affiliations and still be an Educational Center or instructor with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute.

  13. Can I teach CPR or First Aid from another organization along with courses from the Emergency Care and Safety Institute? (Back to Top)

    Yes, the Emergency Care and Safety Institute does not impose restrictions on the classes that you teach.

  14. How do I keep my instructor credentials updated with the Emergency Care and Safety Institute? (Back to Top)

    Institute Instructors must be involved in teaching one class per year during their two-year instructor period. Institute Instructor's credentials expire two years after the date they sign up. At the end of the two-year period, an email reminder will be sent to the instructor and Education Center Coordinator with a link that they can fill out a reauthorization application.

    Instructor must have a copy of the textbook and Instructor Toolkit CD-Rom. The instructional DVD or CD are also available. These products are available individually or in a money-savings Teaching Package. Please visit the bookstore for pricing.

    Orders will be processed within 24 hours and shipped from the warehouse within another 24 hours. Unless otherwise specified, shipments are sent UPS ground and take 3-5 business days to arrive at US destinations.

    No. Any updates will be available in the members area of the website for download.

  18. Do the online courses provide Course Completion Cards?" (Back to Top)

    Students who complete the online courses receive an acknowledgement upon successful completion of the knowledge components and the written exam, but they do not receive a Course Completion Card until they have completed the skills portion of the course with an instructor. This is done with an Educational Center or Institute Instructor who is able to issue the official wallet-sized Course Completion Card.

    No, students are not required to purchase a textbook when taking an online course.

  20. Is it necessary to achieve an official Course Completion Card?(Back to Top)

    There are no requirements to have an official Course Completion Card unless a job requires it. Some people simply want to get the information without having to go through skills training and examinations.

  21. Do Educational Centers or Institute Instructors have to pay for Course Completion Cards? (Back to Top)

    Cards are free when ordering course products (e.g. textbooks for traditional courses or access code cards for online courses). Cards issued for ECSI recertification or for those people who took ECSI online courses on their own and are now looking to complete their skills session cost $15.00 for a sheet of 9 wallet-sized cards. These cards can also be used as replacement cards in case of lost cards or mistyped information.

  22. How long is a Course Completion Card valid? (Back to Top)

    It depends on the course. First aid is valid for three years. All CPR and AED Course Completion Cards are valid for two years. Bloodborne Pathogens requires annual updating.

  23. Does a student have to buy a new textbook if he/she is only recertifying? (Back to Top)

    If there has been a significant update in information, the student should invest in a new textbook. Otherwise, the student can use the old textbook for recertification. If the student is recertifying and using the same textbook, then the Education Center/Instructor is required to issue FA/CPR Pocket Guides or Good Samaritan Guides to the student.   24. How much can an Educational Center or Institute Instructor charge for classes? (Back to Top)

    There is no set fee for courses. Each Educational Center or Institute Instructor can set his/her own fee structure.
